May Intersession | If you love to play computer games and are
interested in politics, then this is the course for you! We will
be using Civilization IV as a way to learn about diplomacy and
negotiation as well as other politically relevant concepts. We'll
meet in a computer lab where you will play the game and learn about
international relations in the process. Course evaluation will be based on game play logs, a few short critical thought papers, and debriefing sessions. You are required to buy the game from any number of stores (Amazon, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, etc) that runs about $20 and have a computer where you can play. Course readings will be made available online.
We will meet as a class on only three dates:
5/10, 5/17, 5/24. During the remaining class hours, you are
expected to play the game, complete play logs, do the assigned reading,
and complete the critical thought papers. |

Politics & The
Arts |
June 1-July 24 Online Course |
This course explores the relationship between politics and the arts. Art is an integral part of our lives, from films to books, music to the fine arts. We will examine the theoretical connections between politics and art by considering both how governments use art to send out messages and as well as how art is often a medium used to critique government and/or political practices. The
course will be based on critical thought papers, discussion participation,
and possibly an online presentation or web page. |
