Paper #3
For this analysis assignment, your objective is to connect the abstract concepts we covered in class with the concrete examples provided in the following Pew case studies: #280 Political Economy in Putin’s Russia: YUKOS, #266 The Rocky Road Toward Debt Forgiveness, #290: A Helping Hand? Eliminating Child Labor in Bangladesh's Garment Industry, #224: Environmental Protection or Economic Development? The Case of the Huai River Basin Clean-Up Plan, and #295 Sewing or Sex? Labor Migration in Thailand. (You may refer to other readings from the class if they are pertinent, but it is not a requirement.) You are limited to 4 pages typed, following the evaluation criteria detailed in your course syllabus.
Considering the areas of international political economy we covered this semester, identify and discuss the three most significant development challenges facing developing, global south (GS) economies. Refer to at least four of the five cases listed above to support your answers as to why these are the most significant development challenges.
In thinking about your answer, you should consider just how possible it is to consider 'the global south' as a collective group when there are countries in a variety of situations (emerging market countries, CITs, heavily indebted countries, LLDCs, HIPCs, countries with more amenable geographic locations, oil rich states, varying types of governments, etc). In your conclusion, consider what responsibilities developed, global north (GN) countries have to an international community largely consisting of GS countries.
This assignment will be graded out of 20 points, just as the other two analyses were.
