Paper #2

For this paper assignment, your objective is to connect the concepts we discussed with game play and the articles.  When it comes to engaging in conflict, cooperating, or seeking security, states weigh the costs and benefits of their actions. Referring to the articles as well as your game play, explain how states are self-interested actors by discussing any three concepts covered in the conflict, cooperation, and security section.

The body of your paper should follow this format:

Paragraph 1:  An introduction that gives a brief overview by collectively and succinctly summing up the basic ideas of the articles, followed by a brief introduction of the three relevant IR concepts of your focus

Paragraphs 2, 3, 4: Each paragraph should include a brief explanation of each concept, followed by an analysis of how game play and how the articles relate to that concept. Note: You need to refer to all of the articles for each concept. In the case of the two Thailand/Cambodia articles, you only need to refer to that situation, not both articles. For each concept, then you should be discussing both the Thai/Cambodia and the Palestinian situations.

Paragraph 5:  A conclusion that explains the extent to which the game reflects (or doesn't) the real-world situation described in the articles and the extent to which the game has helped you to better understand conflict, cooperation, and security
 

You are limited to 3 pages of double-spaced type using 12 point Times New Roman (or the Mac equivalent) with 1" margins. (Note: if you exceed the limit-i.e., if you turn in 4 pages, I will not read anything after page 3.) Papers should have page numbers and be stapled.  Proof read your papers before submitting them because grammatical errors, misspelled words, typos, and failure to follow the prescribed format will reduce your overall grade. 

Do not quote any of the articles; all information should be in your own words summarizing the articles. It is not necessary to use the full name of the article when you introduce it for discussion, just refer to the 'China' article or the 'African rivers' article. As such, you do not need to reference the sources of the articles that I have provided for you.  I do not expect you to introduce any outside research or information for your papers, therefore you should not be citing additional sources of information.

When referring to the game, you need to boldface the font-such as Civilization, CIV IV, or CIV V.

The better you are able to connect all of the articles to the concepts and game play, the better your grade will be.
